Each year, we encourage the boys to try out for at least one UIL event. They are not one to love public speaking and so that rules out the majority of events.
Long ago, when Remi was just a wee little thing in first grade, he began his interest in chess. He asked for his own chess set for Christmas and that December, when he opened his brand new set, his love for this strategic game began. It was only natural that this was the event he would choose to try out for and Roen followed suit.
I have read that chess is a game for the dyslexic mind. I believe this 100%. Both boys enjoy a good game of chess- but that is not what UIL chess actually is. In UIL, you are given a written test asking questions like 'what would be white's best move?' 'how could you put black in check mate in the fewest moves?', 'what would white's most likely next move be?'... offering answers that aren't all neceassarily wrong, you having to play a theoretical game in your mind, choosing the best answer. Ya'll both boys have brought home practice tests and they are hard. Seriously, I can't figure a lot of the questions out. I kid you not, Remi can spout off the answer and reason quickly as if it were nothing more than correctly answering 2 + 2.
Remi has always been our chess man. Last year, Roen only made the team as alternate and so I was pleasantly surprised when he made the actual team this year. And you know what, that little booger ended up getting 2nd place! I couldn't believe it! Remi brought home 3rd place and we all celebrated with high 5's and hugs. What a fun day of early release, chess strategizing and UIL placing!

Woohoo! Way to go Remi and Roen! I am so proud of them. I needed this explanation of the UIL competition. For some reason I thought they actually played a game...kind of like a tournament. So thank you!! Sure got some good looking guys in these pictures.
Love y’all!
