Student Council Historian...

A few months ago, Roen told me he wanted to run for Student Council Officer.

When I asked him if he realized he would have to give a speech in front of the entire 5th grade, he said yes, that he didn't really want to do that, but that he would because he wanted to be in Student Council. I was unbelievably shocked and proud all at the same time!

Roen has always been a bit shy, especially about being on stage, so giving a speech in front of his peers was HUGE for this little guy! This school year has Roen coming out of his shell, out of his brother's shadow and embracing his happy, silly self. I am loving seeing this version of him!

The process started with campaign posters. Roen immediately decided he wanted to go with a turtle theme and so together we brainstormed and came up with this fun little poster. The morning he took it to school to hang in his hallway, he wore a great big, proud smile!

A week later, was speech day.  We worked hard coming up with a short and sweet speech that wasn't too long, but not too short. On that morning, he put on his favorite lucky turtle shirt, gave us one last practice run-through and felt confident and ready.

Only teacher-nominated students had the opportunity to run for officer. 27 students were nominated and only 9 were elected. Both student body (K-5th) and teachers voted for their top 3 picks. It was a long week of waiting for results and during this time, I had many conversations with Roen about how I expected him to handle the results. I hit hard on 'if you don't know how to lose, you don't deserve to win' as often as I can, so he knew regardless of the results, there would be ZERO tears. He was to win with a humble heart or lose with congratulations to those who got good news.

The day he found out, he walked to my car with the same smile he always does- I couldn't tell whether he was elected or not. Once he got in the car, he proudly announced that he would be serving as the 2021-2022 Student Council Historian alongside some of his best friends who were also elected for other positions.

Although, I am thrilled that Roen got the results he wanted, I am most proud that he was elected by teachers, voted on by peers and was brave enough to step out of his comfort zone for something he really wanted!

Roen's Speech:

Hello, my name is Roen!

My Dad always says, there is never a wrong time to do the right thing and never a right time to do the wrong thing.

I want to be your leader that always chooses to do the right thing!

I love golf, turtles and being a Callisburg Wildcat!

I am proud of my school and think I have some pretty awesome classmates!

It makes me happy when I see my friends making good decisions because that is what makes our teachers happy.

Happy teachers make a happy school!

I would like a chance to be a Student Council leader for our school.

I will always do my best to let my light shine for God and show everyone I meet what it means to be a Wildcat.

I think being a Wildcat means having a positive attitude, is an encouraging friend, a hard worker, and a respectful student.

Today, I have on very important request...

Be turtley awesome, and vote for me, Roen Davenport!
