Round 2 of district golf was in Decatur, and we took the boys for a practice round the Saturday before break ended.
I think overall, most golfers struggled on this day. The weather wasn't terrible, but I suppose it could have been nerves. Remi never could find his momentum and ended the day with a 90. Our team fell short behind Paradise and Boyd, coming in 3rd. We were all a little disappointed, but Bennett played well enough to move on to regionals individually! I think our excitement for him outshined our team not moving on.
Going into hole 18 Bennett knew he has played well enough that even if he maxed out, he had earned his spot to regionals! Parents, coaches and teammates all stood around watching the top 5 golfers finish their rounds, a dozen carts following along... you could just feel the adrenaline buzzing in the air! As Bennett made his very last putt, of his last ever district tournament, he walked off the green, straight to Remi, and gave him a hug. It brought tears to my eyes and I couldn't help but think, that that will be one of my most favorite moments of Remi's freshman year! The friendship between these two boys is about as genuine and real as it gets!
Remi ended up tying for 11th out of 44 golfers in district. The top scoring freshman from any school... well done, Remi!!!!
Coach told Micah a few weeks ago, that in all his years of coaching, he has NEVER had a freshman as his 2 bag. Remi held that spot all season long and I am so proud of everything about this season for him. He scored his all-time best with an 80 in Bridgeport, he barely broke 100 with a 97 in Gainesville, he handled district nerves shooting an 84 at Winstar, he had a player from Paradise try to recruit him, he battled insane weather in Bowie scoring the top for Callisburg and then, there was everything in between. There were smiles, there was frustration, there was the feeling of letting his team down and then there was the feeling of leading the pack! And in all of that, there was so much growth!!
This year is gonna be hard to say good-bye to and even harder to top!
