Our last day in Tulum was packed full of adventure! And if you have followed along on this blog for any amount of time, you know these type of days are always my favorite!
We started off the day early! We drove over to Playa Del Carmen, where we hopped on a ferry, and spent the morning in Cozumel. This is an area known for its beautiful reef systems, so we were super excited to get in the water and search for sea creatures! Once we met our captain and guide, we hopped on our boat and had the most amazing welcome out to sea by three dolphins! They arched out of the water, and swam all around us, putting on a show that was nothing short of magical! We visited several snorkeling spots and got up close and personal with two reef sharks (they were both very shy, one hid under the reef and the other swam away, which had Roen and I chasing after the one wanting a better look, which also had us being scolded by our guides), two giant sea turtles, a barracuda, starfish and hundreds of itty bitty jellyfish dancing in the water all around us. It really was like swimming in a giant aquarium and none of us were ready to call it quits! After snorkeling, they took us to a sandbar where they fed the best ceviche and homemade guacamole on a boogie board tabletop, while our ankles were rubbed up on by dozens of the friendliest stingray I have ever met!
Once we finished up in Cozumel, we headed back to Tulum where we visited a private cenote. These freshwater caves were absolutely incredible! Never have I gotten to swim in underwater caves like this and it was one of the coolest things I've ever done. Because this cave system was private, we were the only ones there. The sun was setting, it was eerily dark and quiet, besides the two scuba divers that were getting out of the water as we were getting in, we were the only people for miles. It was so dark, that we swam with flashlights and in places we had to duck under to get to the different chambers. At one point, our guide had us turn off our lights and just float. It was a dark that you could feel, almost taste, a velvety silence, the cold water lapping against our legs, the bats purring and chirping above our heads.... it was like being in a scary movie! Maybe this should be the premise for my very first novel!
Our bodies can really only handle about 30 minutes of waters in these temps, so once the shivers and shakes started, we reluctantly got out.
Ya'll, this day!! It was incredible!!! The giant sea turtles, starfish that were so orange they looked fake, the ceviche that was unlike anything I've ever eaten, the hundreds of fuzzy bats that hung from the caves, the inky water that was both eerie and exhilarating..... this was one of those days that I will never forget!
I loved getting away in the middle of fall. There is something about sneaking away at a time that most are not. It's that feeling of having the world to yourself. You are off drinking up the secrets of exploration, knowing that you are living a real life adventure that not a soul has done exactly the same way and that no one ever will. This one adventure was exclusive to just us, our own slice of memories that we brought home, for permanent keeps!
